Aspen is a tree. The bark and leaf of the tree are used to make medicine. Aspen contains a chemical that is very similar to aspirin. This chemical, known as salicin, may help reduce swelling. Aspen is used in combination with other herbs for treating joint pain (rheumatism), prostate discomforts, back trouble (sciatica), nerve pain (neuralgia), and bladder problems. The stem bark is antiseptic, astringent, diaphoretic, diuretic, febrifuge, nervine and stimulant. The bark contains salicylates, from which the proprietary medicine aspirin is derived.
